The ‘off’ season, or base building season as we prefer to think of it, is a great time to get out and do activities that swimming, biking and running usurp the rest of the year. In addition to letting you savour nature a little more than running allows, hiking is a very relevant activity for Ironman training because you are moving forward on your feet for several hours (hopefully more than your marathon will take!). If you have mountains up which to hike, all the better. Snowshoeing?? Perfect! Going against gravity gets the heart rate up and coming down works those quads with all the eccentric contractions. Be sure to take it all in and smell the… cedars? pines? Cacti?
